Free tax counter

The Centre for Action and Support for Immigrant Families (CASFI) provides the community with a free tax counter, intended for people living in Ontario and Quebec who need help filing their income tax return.

This service is offered by volunteers, with the aim of supporting low-income individuals and families with simple tax situations, in order to facilitate access to government benefits and credits.

Who can benefit from the service?
(Eligibility criteria)

You can use the free CASFI tax counter if:

  • You live in Ontario or Quebec
  • You have a modest income.
  • Your tax situation is simple.

Modest income (indicative thresholds)

Your total family income is generally eligible if it is:
  • 1 person: $40,000 or less.
  • 2 people: $55,000 or less.
  • + $5,000 per dependent.
These thresholds may vary slightly depending on the realities of the program and the number of applications.

Simple tax situation (examples)

Your situation is considered simple if your income comes solely from:
  • A job.
  • A pension.
  • A REER.
  • A scholarship (studies, research, grants).
  • A scholarship (studies, research, grants).
  • Interest (less than $1,200).

Ineligibility criteria

The CASFI tax office cannot handle complex tax situations, including:

  • Self-employment income or employment expenses.
  • Business income or expenses.
  • Rental income or expenses.
  • Interest of over $1,200.
  • Capital gains or losses.
  • Bankruptcy (current or previous year).
  • Foreign property (form T1135).
  • Foreign income (except for exceptions provided for by certain programs).
  • Declarations of deceased persons.

To file your tax return, please have the following information ready:
  • A photo ID (issued by a government).
  • Proof of address.
  • Your SSN (Social Security Number).
  • Your tax slips and relevant documents (T4, T4A, statements, etc.).
These thresholds may vary slightly depending on the realities of the program and the number of applications.

How does the service work?

Depending on the period and availability, the service may be offered:
  • No appointment necessary (first come, first served).
  • By document deposit (you deposit your documents, then retrieve them later).
  • By appointment (in person or remotely).
